COVID-19 delta variant is on the rise at approximately 58% of the cases in the United States. Most people think that the pandemic is over, but not quite. The cases and deaths over the last seven days all over the world have, for the most part, increased.
Nevertheless, take a look at how far we have come over the last year. Last year on July 4th, we were on lockdown in the United States and other parts of the world. What has changed our way of life? You know, it’s the successful COVID-19 vaccination programs around the world.
The COVID-19 vaccine was not recommended in the first trimester until now. Any pregnant woman can get any COVID-19 vaccine. Recent research has shown that the COVID-19 vaccine could protect the baby (initially IGg antibodies, then protection with IgA is added with breastfeeding after delivery) as well as the mother.
In one study, researchers looked at the data in the CDC VARS system from women who had received the COVID-19 vaccine between December 2020 to February 28, 2021. Out of 104 miscarriages, most miscarriages occurred before 20 weeks of pregnancy. There were 1132 women in the first trimester, 1714 second, and 1019 in their third trimester. There were 96 spontaneous abortions in the first trimester at less than 13 weeks and 8 between 8 and 10 weeks.
The final loss of pregnancy is unknown, but there were 8.4 % of spontaneous abortions in the women who were in their first trimenster. Generally, spontaneous abortion happens between 12%-24% of all pregnancies. It is recommended by the Center for Disease Control for women in the first trimester to avoid the COVID-19 vaccine, but talk with your doctor for medical advice. These are guidelines and not medical advice that would be specific for you and your condition. Only your doctor and you would know what’s best for you and your fanmily.
We cannot allow the pandemic to get out of hand even though it is unlikely that we will get back to the level of 2020 cases and deaths. What can we do? The World Health Organization is trying to articulate what we will need to do to get control over the delta variant.
Time after time there seems to be a new variant popping up around the world. Some experts seem to think that we have not seen the end of the different variants due to the nature of the virus to mutate. Perhaps we need to get back to strict public health measures, would you?
